Sustainability within Facility Management is usually only thought about in terms of green initiatives, such as energy management and recycling; but it is much more than that. Through utilisation of the Sustainability Excellence Model, Emrill apply sustainability to all areas of the business to the extent that it is now part of every day working.
The four key priority areas are:
→ Climate change and energy
→ Natural resource protection and environmental enhancement
→ Sustainable communities and workforce
→ Sustainable consumption and production
These areas are further split into 12 impact areas that are key to our business.
→ Health and Safety
→ Environmental Impacts
→ Emrill’s Customer
→ Value and Risk
→ Resource Use
→ Emrill People
→ Governance
→ Supply Chain
→ Community
→ Biodiversity
→ Design
The current Sustainability Excellence Model plots our journey over the next four years from awareness through to excellence. Each impact area has a set of questions to be answered. This influences the development of our Business Plan to deliver sustainable improvements both internally and externally.
Emrill measures Health and Safety performance using the AC2E model which rates Awareness, Competence, Compliance and Excellence to generate a continually improving Health and Safety culture. “Target Zero” is monitored in terms of the Accident Frequency Rate for reportable accidents, with the aim of eliminating them entirely. Through the “Don’t Walk By” campaign we encourage staff to report any potentially dangerous item or activity and are proud to announce the completion of 10,000,000 man hours recently over a 9 month period without a single major incident.
Customer retention is also key to a sustainable organisation, which is why Emrill actively seeks feedback on performance in order to continuously improve and exceed expectations.
The Emrill Sustainability Team meets regularly to discuss areas where we can raise awareness to the general public, promote a work/life balance (particularly within staff accommodation), contribute to the community, and make better use of resources.
